
The series aimed to expose young people to classic literature through the more popular medium of a comic book. Classic Comics was a series of comic book adaptations of literary classics published from 1941 until 1971. Typee was Melville’s first novel, and is a mixture of fiction and autobiography concerning his travels in the Pacific. Ezra Whiteman illustrated the cover which depicts a man in the foreground fleeing from a spear through by three Polynesian pursuers. The novel was adapted for Classics Illustrated by Harry Miller and published by Gilberton in April 1947. Originally launched as ebooks with the intention of making them available for every e-reading platform, Trajectory has now created the app version for iPad. Now, Massachusetts-based digital publisher Trajectory has bought the digital rights and is bringing the seventy-year-old books back to life as an app, available through iTunes. Unfortunately for fans who are fond of the nostalgia of the pocket-sized books, the collectors items are now cost in the hundreds of dollars from book dealers. Many a student’s grade in high school English was saved by the comic book-style Classics Illustrated, and even more student simply enjoyed the link drawing illustrations and original graphic novel adaptation of some of the most famous works of literature ever written.
